Hue - A Glimpse of History
The Citadel City of Phu Xuan was built on the site of present day Hue in 1607 by Lords Nguyen Hoang. In 1744, Phu Xuan became the capital of the southern part of Vietnam under the rule of the Nguyen Lords. The Tay Son troops occupied the city from 1786 until 1802, when it fell to Nguyen Anh. He renamed the city Hue and crowned himself Emperor Gia Long, thus founding the Nguyen dynasty, which ruled the country for 143 years. Immediately upon his accession, Gia Long began the decades-long construction of the citadel, the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City. On August 24th, 1945, Emperor Bao Dai abdicated and became the last emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, and brought Vietnam’s monarchy to an end.
Citadel
Hue's citadel, which covers an area of 52 sq. km, was constructed between 1804 and 1833 by Emperor Gia Long, on a site carefully chosen by geomancers. The citadel is encircled by a zigzag moat which is 30 meters across and four meters deep. The Imperial City (Dai Noi) is made up of three different walled enclosures.
The Imperial Enclosure (Hoang Thanh) and the Forbidden Purple City (Tu Cam Thanh) are enclosed within the Exterior Enclosure (Kinh Thanh).
The Exterior Enclosure was built within 27 years (1805 - 1832) in the style of the French military architect Vauban. The wall is made of stone, bricks and earth, and measured 8 meters high and 20 meters thick. Ten large fortified gates topped with watch towers were built at various points along the wall. Towards the Chuong Duc Gate are 9 Holy Canons, each of which is five metres long and weighs 12 tones, symbolizing for the protectors of the Palace and Kingdom.
The Imperial Enclosure, which is six meters high and 2.5 km long, is where the emperor's official functions were carried out. Inside the enclosure are palaces, temples and flower gardens. The Imperial Enclosure is accessible via four richly decorated gates, of which the Ngo Mon (Noon Gate) is the most famous, topped by the Lau Ngu Phung, the Five Phoenix Watch Tower, from which the emperor used to preside over formal ceremonies.
The Forbidden Purple City, the innermost enclosure, was reserved solely for the private life of the emperor and the royal family. It is encircled by a brick wall 1.2 m high and 4 meters thick with seven gates set into the wall.
Lang Co
Lang Co is a paradisiacal peninsula of palm-shaded sand with a crystal-clear turquoise blue lagoon on one side and many kilometers of beachfront facing the South China Sea on the other. Looking from the top of the Hai Van Pass, Lang Co appears as pretty as a picture.
Royal Tombs
The imperial tombs of the Nguyen Kings lie scattered on the hillsides either side of the Perfume River to the west of Hue City. Although the dynasty had 13 Kings, only seven of them reigned until their deaths, and thus put to rest in this valley of the Nguyen Kings. Almost every mausoleum was carefully planned and constructed by the emperor himself when he was still on the throne.
Each tomb has a large brick-paved courtyard containing stone figures of elephants, saddled horses soldiers, civil and military mandarins. In front of the tomb stands the stele pavilion containing the tall marble or stone stele engraved with the biography of the deceased king written by his successor; however, Emperor Tu Duc wrote his own. There are temples and houses built around the mausoleum where to worship the deceased king and queen and for the king's concubines, servants and the soldiers who guarded the tomb. Setting foot in any of the tombs, one feels a sense of admiration for the noble grandeur and elegant simplicity of the architecture.
Tomb of Emperor Minh Mang
Planned by the King himself, The tomb was constructed one year before his death in 1840 and was finished by his successor Thieu Tri in 1843. The tomb is perhaps the most splendid of the royal tombs. The setting blends the beauty of the nature with the majestic architecture and superb stone sculpture created by its many anonymous craftsmen.
Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc
Tu Duc’s Mausoleum, 7 km southwest of Hue City, was constructed between 1864 and 1867 and is set amidst frangipani trees and a grove of pines. According to the king, to die is to begin a new life in a new empire, so that he designed an exquisitely harmonious tomb for him which resembles a royal palace in miniature for use both before and after his death. Visitors to the tomb will be impressed by its majesty and serenity.
Tu Duc is the fourth king of the Nguyen dynasty who ruled from 1848 to 1883, the longest reign of any of the Nguyen Kings. He had 104 wives and thousands of concubines; however, he had no offspring.
Thien Mu Pagoda
Thien Mu Pagoda was built in 1601 by Lords Nguyen Hoang on a hillock on the left bank of the Perfume River. It is one of the most ancient and famous pagodas in Vietnam. The symbolic feature of the pagoda is its seven-storey octagonal Phuoc Duyen Tower, 21 m high, built by Emperor Thieu Tri in 1844. Each of the seven storeys represents a different reincarnation of Buddha.
In 1710, Lords Nguyen Phuc Chu had an enormous bell cast for the pagoda and named it Dai Hong Chung, which weighs 2052 kilos. The bell can be audible 10 km away. He also wrote a short history of the pagoda which was engraved on a stele of 2.5 m high mounted on a massive marble tortoise. The legend of its construction must also be an interesting story to hear when seeing this pagoda. The image of Thien Mu Pagoda with its bell sound has become the symbol for Hue and has entered the literature, poetry and music of the Vietnamese.

Despite the force of his fall, the giant managed to get up and eventually catch the fairy. They became a nice couple, but soon the gods intervened and punished the male fairy, sending him off to a "re-education camp" for an indefinite sentence. The love-sick fairy waited patiently for her husband to come back, but after a very long time, despairing that he might never return, she lay down in sorrow and turned into Co Tien Mountain (Fairy Mountain). When the husband fairy finally returned and saw what had become of his wife, he prostrated himself in grief next to the boulder with his handprint on it. Constructed in an area of 2,090 square kilometres and beautifully embraced by winding rivers and green countryside, Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam's biggest and most populated city of over 5 million inhabitants and is the main gateway to welcome guests to Vietnam. This young, fashionable city boasts of not only the most important centre of trade, industry and tech - science of Vietnam but also one of the most fascinating destinations for visitors. Ho Chi Minh City is also called with another familiar name - Saigon, which was once known by the world under the title "Saigon - Pearl of the Far East".
Visitors will feel comfortable and pleasant here by the available conveniences that Ho Chi Minh City offers. Throughout the city, visitors will feel a warm welcome and be greeted by friendly smiles that Your browser does not support inline frames or is currently configured not to display inline frames. the optimistic people of this city have to offer. However, beside the modern appearance and the bustling daily activities to be seen, Saigon is also an ideal place for those who want to discover the highlights of the Oriental culture. Here, in the heart of the city, you will see ancient Vietnamese-style pagodas, characteristic age-old temples and communal houses, a charming China Town of the 17th century, or you can find a hint of the 19th century European culture by the famous French-built churches and monuments. Each of which is really worth a visit.
The History Museum, built in 1929 by the Société des Études Indochinoises, is just inside the main entrance to the city's zoo. The museum has an excellent collection of artifacts illustrating the evolution of the cultures of Vietnam, from the Bronze Age Dong Son civilization and the Oc Eo civilisation, to the Chams, Khmers and Vietnamese. The Museum is open from 8:00 to 11:30am and 1:30 to 4:30 pm daily.
The church is a fine landmark that makes Saigon more charming by its neo-Romanesque architectural style, red brick facade and two 40m-high towers rising above the city. In front of the Cathedral is the statue of the Virgin Mary standing in the centre of the tree-lined square, looking downDong Khoi street.
There are many masses daily and the 9.30 am Sunday mass might be the best one for foreigners to attend. Saigon boasts several beautiful French-built churches, of which the Notre Dame Cathedral is the most splendid and typical one. The Cathedral, constructed between 1877 and 1883, is set in the heart of Saigon's government quarter.
Giac Lam pagoda dates from 1744 and is believed to be the oldest pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City. Outside the building, in the front garden, there is a bodhi (bode) tree which was the gift of a monk from Sri lanka. Next to the tree is a gleaming white statue of Quan Am, the goddess of Mercy, standing on a lotus blossom. Inside there are funeral tablets, plentiful miniature statues of Buddha and Bodhisattvas made of jack wood and a large bronze bell attached with lists of names of people seeking happiness and the names of sick people and the deads. It is believed that when the bell is rung, the sound will resonate to the heavens and carry with it the attached applications. This site is worth a visit and to learn the spiritual life of the ancient metropolitans.
Architecturally looking modern, yet the Reunification Palace has experienced historical changes over its time course and today becomes one of the most fascinating site to see in Saigon. In 1868, the Norodom Palace was built on this site as a residence for the Cochinchina's General Governor. After the French departed, the palace was handed over the Saigon Government and became home of South Vietnamese presidents. In 1962, two pilots of Saigon Air Forces bombed down part of the palace, and in the same year a new mansion was built on the existing site with a larger scale, the new building was named the Independence Palace. Since 1975, it has been once more renamed the Reunification Palace. The palace covers an area of 2,000 sq.m and consists of 5 storeys with 100 rooms and chambers decorated with finest modern Vietnamese art and craft. Perhaps most interesting of all is the basement with its network of tunnels, telecommunications centre and war room.
The Saigon’s Chinatown, or Cholon, is located in the City’s 5th district. It is a traditional Chinese Viet area with a separate culture of its own which has to be experienced. This China Town was set up by the end of 18th century when the Ming dynasty in China was overthrown. Many Chinese who were faithful to the Ming ran to Vietnam for peace and business and were permitted by the Vietnamese Lords to settle in this southern part of the country. Now there are almost half a million Hoas (Chinese Vietnamese) with many shops and family factories.
In this animated China town, visitors will have chance to visit Chinese pagodas and temples, enjoy Chinese special dishes, and do shopping in Binh Tay Market, which is always crowded as a wholesale market, especially to take part in exciting festivals of the Hoas at which you can see the dances of unicorns, dragons and lions performed by the site’s inhabitants.
About 65 kilometres northwest of Ho Chi Minh City lies the suburban district of Cu Chi, a small area with an important history in the Vietnam wars against the French and the Americans. Cu Chi is famous for its 250-kilometer network of underground tunnels built by the communist guerrillas here. The district's villages and wards are interconnected by this network of tunnels with secret openings. The main tunnel is between 60 - 70 cm wide and 80 - 100 cm high and has either a delta shape or vaulted ceiling.
The tunnel roof is a layer of hard earth of about 3 - 4 m thick that could withstand the weight of a 60 tontank or heavy artillery and the impact of bombs weighing up to 100 kg. The axis tunnel with its zigzag arms leads to deeper layers to numerous shelters and rooms. Visitors are welcomed to Cu Chi Tunnels to see and admire this legendary work of the Vietnamese people who with the most rudimentary tools could manage to dig down 4 - 12 meters in Cu Chi's rock-like soil, and to experience how life underground is.
Vung Tau, known under the French as Cap Saint Jacques, is a provincial coastal town with beautiful sandy beaches and small rocky mountains. It is 120 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City and can be easily reached by road or by hydrofoils following the stream of the Saigon River and through the Cangio estuary. Vung Tau has been a favourite weekend venue for the Saigonese to escape the steamy heat of the big city.
Visitors to this coastal city can cycle around or climb up the Vung Tau Peninsula’s two mountains overlooking the South China Sea. Beside the beautiful beaches for swimming and sunbathing, there are also a number of interesting sight spots to see, including several mountain-sided pagodas such as Niet Ban Tinh Xa or Thich Ca Phat Dai (Sakyamuni Pagoda), old French-built villas, the Villa Blanch with old Chinese pottery from the Qing dynasty exhibited, the lighthouse, and a huge statue of Jesus Christ standing on the top of the mountain blessing the Pacific Ocean, etc. or visit to the small seaside fishing villages to see the daily life of the local fishermen.
The Villa Blanch
Built in 1898 as a summer palace for the French Governor Paul Doumer, the Villa Blanch (White villa) is set amidst frangipanis and bougainvilleas on a lushly forested hillside overlooking the sea. It is an ideal place to sit, relax and contemplate. In 1909, the Vietnamese patriotic King Thanh Thai was exiled here before being sent to the French island of Reunion. Before 1975, the South government used it as a resort and a part-time playground for the presidents and high officers. The villa is now the museum of antiques and sea objects. Inside, there is an exhibit of old Chinese pottery, from the Qing dynasty, salvaged from an 18th century shipwreck near Con Dao Island.
Vung Tau seaside Resort
Vung Tau has 5 beaches scattered over the peninsula. Bai Truoc, or Front Beach is located on the northern side of Vung Tau and stands between the Big and Small Mountains. Restaurants, hotels and kiosks are accessible close by the beach.
O Quan Beach is a peaceful cove with good wind. Surfers particulary enjoy this area.
Dua Beach is located approximately 2 km from the center of the city. This quiet beach is enjoyed by those who do not like crowded beaches. This is a great place to watch the sun setting over the South China Sea.

Dau Beach (Mulberry Beach) lies at the foot of Big Mountain, 3 km from Front Beach. It is a small and quiet beach, attractive for its calmness, cleanness and beauty.
Binh Chau Thermal Springs are located 70 km west of Vung Tau City, in the middle of a vast, wild area of mangroves and bush trees. The water temperature reaches up to 80oC, temperature at which an egg can be boiled in 10 minutes. Binh Chau Thermal Springs consists of many lakes and bonds joining through an underground pool of mineral water coming from a network of 70 main sources.
The hot water is used for its medicinal values; 730 C water is let to pools to cure skin disease and rheumatism. Binh Chau Thermal Springs belong to a preserved area that also features numerous forests, beaches and lakes. Hotels and restaurants have been built to accommodate visitors who go there for health as well as for recreational purposes. It is an attractive site for those who love nature and want to rest in an enchanting environment.
Tay Ninh, 100 kilometers northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, shares a long border with Cambodia. To the north of the province is the mountainous region where lies the 980-meter high Ba Den Mountain (Black Lady Mountain), the highest peak in the South Vietnam. A prominent part of the province is occupied by forests of rubber trees. This area is well-known for its Caodaist Holy See, the headquarter of a newly-founded religion of Vietnam which combines various sources of religion such as Buddhism, Catholicism, Confucianism, Taoism and Hinduism; and for its Via Ba Festivals taking place at the mountain which attract thousands of pilgrims each year. A two-hour driving tour from Ho Chi Minh City to Tay Ninh is quite interesting and offers a chance to be close to the nature.
Caodai Holy See
Caodai Holy See, constructed in 1933, is 4 km from the centre of Tay Ninh, in the Long Hoa village. The complex includes the Great Temple, administrative offices, residences for officials and adepts, and a hospital of traditional Vietnamese herbal medicine to which people in the south travel for treatment.
The most interesting building in this complex is the Great Temple, built according to architectural influences of the Caodai Sect. The construction is a harmonious fusion of Asian and European styles, with domes and embellishments showing the spirit of the religion. Above the front portico of the Great Temple is the "divine eye", the supreme symbol of Caodaism. The Great Temple is built on nine levels, which represent the nine steps to heaven. Prayers are conducted in the Great Temple every day at 6 am, noon, 6 pm and midnight. Shoes must be removed upon entering the building.
Ba Den Mountain :
Ba Den Mountain (Black Lady Mountain), 14 km northeast of Tay Ninh town, rises 986 meters above the rice paddies of the surrounding countryside. It is the highest elevation in the south and the last mountain on the south extremity of the Truong Son Mountain Range. The name Back Lady Mountain is derived from the legend of Huong, a Young woman who married her true love despite advances of a wealthy mandarin. While her husband was away doing military service, she would visit a magical statue of Buddha at the summit of the mountain. One day, Houng was attacked by kidnappers but, preferring death to dishonour, threw herself off a cliff.
Several shrines and pagodas were built on the mountain as well as in the caves. Ba (Lady) and Hang (Cave) pagodas attract many pilgrims during the lunar New Year and Vu Lan Festivals. The hike from the base of the mountain to the temple complex and back taking about one and a half hour is fascinating.

Formed by sediment deposited by the Mekong River, the Mekong Delta, the southernmost region of Vietnam, is well known for its immense green rice fields, fruit-bearing orchards, and meek, hospitable peasants. Visiting Mekong Delta and you understand why it is called the "rice basket" of Vietnam. Rice and fruits produced here are famous not only around the country but also around the area.
The Mekong River, one of the greatest rivers in Asia, originates high in the Tibetan plateau and flows 4500 km through China, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam before emptying into the sea at nine mouths. At this end, the Mekong splits into many branches, watering the whole pancake flat land of South Vietnam. The Mekong Delta consists of a crisscrossed network of river arms and canals that interconnects the provinces of the area. In here, life and transportation happen mainly on water: houses are made on water, festivals and even markets are also held on water; almost any activities of the local people are closely associated with the rivers. A local boatman with his sampan will bring visitors from one surprise to another. Most interesting of all is to see bustling floating markets on the rivers in Mekong Delta where sellers and buyers bargain and exchange goods from their boats.
