Lang Son - capital of mountainous Lang Son Province - is situated in a large valley on the left bank of the Ky Cung River, at an elevation of 500 meters. The area is largely populated by ethnic minorities: Tay, Nung, Man and Dao. Lang Son has long been an important trading post and crossing point into China. Local people exchange their forest products for the commodities of the neighboring Chinese. Local forest products usually include bear hides, medicinal leaves, honey, stuffed reindeers and bowls of silkworm larvae. The most beautiful landscape to see in Lang Son is Tam Thanh Grottoes, 3.5 km from the town and near Ky Lua Village. However, the real attraction is at its markets.
Tam Thanh Grottoes
Located near the center of Lang Son town, Tam thanh Grottoes include three grottoes : Nhat Thanh (the first), Nhi Thanh (the second) and Tam Thanh (the third). The most famous is Tam Thanh grotto. Its door is approximately 8 m high, opening to a corridor with 30 stone steps carved in the mountain. There are dense groves hiding the grotto from the sun. Nhi Thanh grotto has excellent stalactities and stalagmites. The Ngoc Tuyen River flows through the grotto, which gives it added charm.
