Dien Bien Phu is the chief town of Lai Chau province, 492 km from Hanoi. It is situated in the Muong Thanh plains and surrounded by high mountains. Dien Bien Phu is known around the world as a fierce battlefield where historical combats between the Vietnamese Army and the French Colonialists took place in 1954. Its victory for the Vietnamese made the world surprised. The remains of the former battlefield are still preserved here and attract many visitors, particularly the veterans and their descendants. The underground shelter of General De Castries, the bases on the hills A1, C3, Him Lam, Doc Lap, the war museum, and the war cemetery are usually the main attractions. Visitors can also visit to the local hill tribes that remain the primitive life to know more about their way of life and traditional cultures.
